Inspiration: Freshly Made Sketch #536
My favorite set from the new Lawn Fawn summer release is Pool Party, and when I saw the circles on the Freshly Made Sketch, I knew it would be perfect to pair with the set.
I made my own water background with a technique I hadn't used in a while: Distress Oxide inks on glossy paper, finishing with micro glaze to seal the ink in. I used a mix of Salty Ocean, Salvaged Patina, Stormy Sky, Speckled Egg and Shaded Lilac to get this result. I kept having this idea of adding silver foiling as well to mimic the sun's reflection over the water so after my background was dry, I went through my stencil and when I saw Halloween Night from Carta Bella, I thought the little stars and dots would be perfect. I used the Duo Gel Medium with it, let it air dry and then I ran the background through my laminator with a sheet of holographic foil. This added a very neat touch to the water background.
For the main image, I colored the little critters and their floaties. I think the rectangle image can be used as a towel, but I wanted it to be a pool float on this card. I drew inspiration from the new In Colors to create a bright colour scheme. I tested out my newly acquired i-Mend Self-Mending Magnetic Pro Deck. This thing is expensive (especially in Canadian currency), but I had seen a video of a store owner who had used it extensively for many months preparing her class supplies and it was holding up really well. I had the old Sizzix magnetic platform that I barely used because the dies always jumped on it and it was driving me insane and the selling point for this pro deck was that it was supposedly fully magnetic (instead of having different magnets spread inside the plate). Well, I'll have to test it some more, but I was mostly looking forward to using it with Lawn Fawn's little pieces without having to use a million little pieces of tape, but unfortunately, I found that the dies do skip on certain part of the platform, so that was disappointing. When I tried to cut the stitched rectangle frame out of silver glitter paper, it also was not fully cut through even after three passes, which had been my beef with self-healing plates in the past. I've also found that some of the dies that I've used many times in the past (like Everyday Sentiment Banners) left bruising on the paper, which it does not usually do with regular plates. I'll keep testing, but my initial reaction is disappointment.
On a brighter note, the Lawn Fawn products are not disappointing. I used Henri's ABCs dies to create the word "relax" and stamped the first part of the sentiment using the Sweet as a Peach stamp set (in its French version). The new In Colors products include glimmer paper with a very nice ombre on it, so I alternated Sweet Sorbet, Parakeet Party and Tahitian Tide papers to create my die-cut word. I also cut the letters twice out of the matching colored cardstock and layered the letters so they would have more weight and a little bit of a shadow.
The stitched frame was die-cut out of Sizzix's silver glitter paper and added around the water scene. I picked a green envelope from a Paper Cut envelope assortment and I stamped a matching image on it in matching ink. I finished the card using matte decorative dots, Glitter Gloss on the unicorn's mane and Glossy Accents on the beach ball, glasses and snorkel.
