Inspiration: Lasting Memory Layout Challenge #597 (Something Old - Picture from 2010)
This project came together in an interesting way. When I sat down to craft today, I wasn't sure what to work on, so I organized my supplies a bit and then decided to try the paper sculpting kit I recently purchased from my local craft store during a Sizzix sale. I pulled the Florals dies (#3 and #4 sets) from Elizabeth Craft Designs and picked papers from Mintay's Life Stories collection to work with. I wanted to add a little something to the flowers, so I decided to test out the Foundry Wax from Ranger to add silver foiling to the edges of the petals.
Once I was done with the flowers, I decided I wanted to make a grungy tag, inspired by some mixed media videos I've seen on Instagram lately. I remembered I have some black watercolor paper that I seem to hardly ever use, so I pulled out a piece and used my Nested Tags dies on it. I started by stamping the Advert background stamp from Tim Holtz on the tag, embossing it in Dirty Sand Baked Texture powder. I added images from the Ticket Booth stamp set, embossed in Ranger's Verdigris Antiquities powder. I then added white embossing paste using the Gears and Countdown stencil and I added silver Foundry Wax to the edges of the tag as well. I spritzed water on my craft mat to clean up the wax and I realized the remaining wax was mixing nicely with the water, so I dipped my brush in it and splattered my tag with it. After the paste was dry, I spritzed the tag with Iced Spruce and Frayed Burlap Distress Oxide sprays.
To decorate the tag, I pulled a silver heart that was sitting on my desk, which I had created when testing out the Lucky Love Impresslits, also purchased during the Sizzix sale. I used Graphite and Sage Leaves waxes to highlight the design of the edges, and I started layering flowers, heart and fussy cut images on the tag. I also found a die-cut with the word Wanderlust in the Cartography ephemera pack from Carta Bella, so I added it to the bottom of the tag. I cut a hole reinforcer and tied jute twine at the top.
I could have kept the tag as is, but then I started wondering how it would look on a page, so I went back to the paper collection, found this beautiful layered page and then I went looking through my pictures for something appropriate. I found pictures dating back to 2010 of my father and I in front of my old college residence, which does not belong to the school anymore and has clearly been badly neglected. That being said, the teal door with the peeling paint could not have matched the Mintay collection more perfectly, especially since the cut-apart page included a teal wooden door image, which I made sure to work into my design somewhere. I worked in a few 49 & Market hardware stickers to decorate the page as well and I created my title using alphabet stickers from American Crafts and Prima Marketing.
