inspiration: April 2021 Page Maps Sketch + Lasting Memory Challenge #597 (Use Something Old - Leather frame from Making Memories)
I finally had time to crack into the Summer Lovin' collection from Simple Stories. I found some pictures taken around the pool to go with it.
I find the water hose patterned paper really cute, so I used it for the center of the page, and went with the colorful diagonal stripes for the outer border. I gutted the center of the paper so that I wouldn't waste a full page of paper (paper prices keep going up, so it's better to not be wasteful) and also so I'd have more of this pattern for other projects. I was using pictures that were not the same size at the sketch I drew inspiration from, so I rearrange a lot of the elements, but I kept the idea of using frames around the pictures and the circles as well. The frame elements reminded me that I have this really old red leather frame from Making Memories (that I'm sure dates back to the early 2000s). The color was perfect so I filled it with printed vellum (currently sold in Stampin' Up! minicatalogue) and layered a sentiment sticker over it. I've mentioned it before, I wish the stickers from Simple Stories' sticker book were not made of thin paper because it makes it really hard to layer those elements over anything that's not flat. Here, I had to cut strips of white cardstock to place behind the sticker to make it sturdy enough to be lifted off the page and over the frame. I did the same thing to the sun, backed it with a circle punched out of white cardstock and if you look really closely, it makes the colour in the center different from at the end of the rays, but it's just apparent if you look really closely.
On the left side, I layered a leftover piece of Old Olive cardstock I found when I was looking for cardstock to mat my pictures with. It was actually a piece of Old Olive cardstock I had die-cut a stitched rectangle out of, but I had used Outside In Stitched Rectangles, which left stitching around the frame as well, and I liked how the leftover looked like a polaroid, so I decided to add it behind the main picture, again inserting frames similarly as in the sketch. I added a circle punched out of pink gingham paper and added chipboard elements, as well as little puffy flip flops. From the puffy stickers, I also added the squirt gun right to the journaling block (which came from a cut-apart sheet), the fireflies, a little flower, the beach ball, added in the pool, and the fire hose, which I placed right to the foam sticker title. I'll admit I was initially see blush pink paired with such bright vibrant colours, but it does look pretty on the finished page.
I added large white ric rac on the right edge of the page, and placed decorative brads at the top and bottom. I used a tab from the sticker book to add the date to the edge of a picture. I also added a decorative brad to the title, but it was mostly to hide a boo-boo: the paper cracked when I lifted the foam up to slide the puffy sticker underneath and my eye kept going back to that detail, so I decided to try embellishing to hide that problem.
