I am SO pleased with how this scrapbook page turned out. I was initially planning to use the Winter Cottage collection for a scrapbook page since I had it out, but then I spotted this picture of my niece taken a few years ago and it dawned on me that her snowsuit is the exact colours of the Feelin' Frosty collection from Simple Stories. I had purchased everything from that gorgeous new collection the minute it came out, but had yet to use it, so I dove in. On a whim, I decided I wanted to try out making my own background for the page. This is where watching all of those process videos on YouTube is paying off. I remembered that Missy Whidden always adds gesso to her cardstock before doing her mixed media so that the pigments don't soak in the cardstock right away and she has time to move it around. I covered a piece of textured cardstock with white gesso, let it dry, then I pulled out my Gansai Tambi watercolours out, added a few spots of colour with a paintbrush and spritzed the page with water. I moved the cardstock around to create drips and when I was happy with what I had, I used my heat tool on the lowest setting to dry the page. For a very first try, it turned out really good!
I wanted to add stamped snowflakes and was trying to think of a set I could use. I remembered that the Cute Snowflakes set had cutesy images, so I pulled it out (and later realized that I have purchased the Feelin' Frosty stamp set from the collection and could just have used that one!!). I made sure to use soft colours so that it would look like the colours wash off towards the edges of the page.
I then used papers from the collection and placed them as per an old Page Maps sketch. At the top, I used the a border die from the Lily Pad set, with holographic paper. At the bottom, I wanted to create a ruffle and I remembered that I received some plain collage paper in a Tim Holtz grab bag, that I had no idea what to do with. This worked out perfectly here. I created folds, and then I tore the paper in three sections, that I glued side by side underneath the patterned paper to create a bit of texture.
I made my life easy for the title and simply picked from the foam stickers. Those have been such a nice addition to the Simple stories line. I added the Winter Days banner at the top and the word fun right next to the picture. Inspired by the sketch, I picked the snowman chipboard to go on the page, and then I added cardstock stickers, enamel dots and decorative brads. I handwrote the names and date and the page was done. Quick and easy, but oh so cute!
