Inspiration: Calvinball 2022
I unfortunately missed my chance to take part in the Calvinball challenges last year as I heard about it a little too late and my month of March was already too busy, but I made a note in my calendar this year to make sure to check it early. I plan to craft some more this weekend as my schedule is pretty open.
The first thing I did when I sat down to scrap tonight was go back to my Disney pictures. I really wanted to pull the Fun at the Park collection from Doodlebug again, so I picked pictures accordingly. I have those pictures taken at the Hollywood and Vine during a character meet and greet lunch. We did a lot of character dining that week, but this restaurant was easily one of my favorites. The characters were particularly funny, personable and very generous with their time. Daisy actually sat down at the table to interact with my two-year-old niece and Goofy also had a special interaction with her and made her laugh. He also circled back to our table later and pointed to the map of the park I was looking at as we were trying to decide where to go to next. I asked him where we should go and he mimed Slinky Dog to us, which was pretty funny. The meal was also really good and I just have a soft spot for Hollywood Studios because of the retro decors and the characters' vintage get-ups, so fond memories to look back on.
I've recently purchased more page templates from Simple Stories as I've enjoyed using the one that I had. Because I was using multiple pictures, I pulled out the template with 4" x 6" and 4" x "4" openings and used that as a starting point for the whole layout. I glued three pictures on a piece of turquoise paper from the Petite Prints pack and left the fourth spot open for journaling or embellishing. I picked the star paper for my background and decided I would fill in the space at left with a film strip from another patterned paper.
Now that this was decided, I looked at Page Maps sketches for ideas on how to do the left page. I used black textured cardstock for the background to fit with the darker background of the right page and added polka dot paper to the center. I was really liking the map pattern, so I used that one for the banner. In order for the two pages to feel linked, I cut another film strip and glued it at an angle on my left page. I was planning to discard the piece I had cut off the edge, but then I realized if I added it to the right page, it created a visual link that worked out even better to make the layout cohesive. I used that strip to my advantage to add the title. I found a Just My Type alphabet sticker collection that's from Doodlebug so I knew the red would match and even though I've used quite a bit of it, I had the right remaining letters for my title, including the capital letter and exclamation point. I have been hoarding my alphabet stickers for a long time and I recently decided there was no reason to keep them for a rainy day, so now I'm making an effort to use them more and possibly finish a few packs if possible to free up some room.
I had also recently prepared some Disney-themed shaker with my Queen & Co dies so I already had this cute Goofy hat shaker done in the perfect shades of green and black (love when that happens!), so I added that to my page as well.
I then proceeded to embellish the page using stickers, cut-aparts, washi tape and ephemera pieces from the same collection. Here are the elements that were included on this layout based on the current Calvinball point list:
- One point per pages = 2
- Write a blog post about your project = 1
- Publish on Instagram - ½
- Post in Calvinball gallery
- Date your project = 1
- Washi tape = 1
- Stamping = 1
- Green = 1
- Airplane = 1
- Polka Dots = 1
- Enamel Dots = 1
- Use blue and yellow together = 1
That gives me a total of 13 points for this layout.
