Inspiration: Festive Friday #42 (Black + Rhinestones + Birds)
I've had the Regions Beyond dies aside for a while, but I finally found inspiration to use them today. While the new Jolly St. Nick dies look pretty scary to put together but actually came together quickly, those are the opposite. They're small so you would think it would be fairly fast... Not so much. Add to that that there was a lot of thinking involved on how to combine all of those random images together and how to use a limited palette of colours but still have the images pop up nicely against the patterned paper. It took a while, but I'm quite pleased with the result.
Another new item I got to break in is the Type Lowercase Alphabet Bigz die from Tim Holtz. I've loved that one ever since it came out many years ago. Was not in love with the price, though. (And the room those Bigz dies take to store either.) Now that Tim has mentioned that Sizzix was not renewing his alphabet Bigz, I realized that it was probably now or never to get them. My usual store didn't have a whole lot of Bigz alphabets left, but when I recently ordered from another online source, I discovered they were having a sale on Sizzix items that week and that they still had a lot of the Bigz alphabets in stock! I'm really happy to finally have this one. I used it to die-cut "boo!" out of black glitter paper (and I am now wondering why I wrote the word in English while I could easily have used the French spelling instead! I was obviously distracted and not really thinking straight.)
Pulling out the Foursquare Backdrop Portrait die from Lawn Fawn helped provide a starting point for all of the little elements. I was playing with the bottles and the candles in the bottom row and realized if I pulled out the little shelf from last year's Laboratory dies, it would help group all of those elements together. I did the cute book and feather at the top and finished with the crystal ball. I used the two smaller stars to create a reflection on the globe, and I added the crow on the side. Those two elements allowed me a way to glue the vellum crystal ball in place while hiding the adhesive. The bottom of the crystal ball was die-cut out of woodgrain cardstock from Lawn Fawn. I couldn't resist adding the cute keys, out of Copper Foil paper, and I added rose gold rhinestones in the center, which works perfectly to add dimension. I repeated the same rhinestones throughout.
As for my last pocket, I decided to add a cardstock insert to make the pocket more sturdy and added patterned paper at the top of the insert. I found a little scrap of black striped grosgrain ribbon, which I tied into a bow and glued on the pocket with sticky strip. The bottom of the pocket was also ink blended with Black Soot and Hickory Smoke to make it stand out a little more. The die-cut elements were inked with Creamy Brown Chalk ink from ColorBox. I purchased that ink when I was starting out with scrapbooking. This ink pad is probably 15 years old and yet it still works like new. I was looking in my Distress Oxide drawers for a pale distressing color when I found it in the back of the drawer and I figured I could get some use out of it.
