inspiration: Color Throwdown #529
The second I saw the warm shades of the CC challenge, I knew they would work well with the rooster from the Home to Roost stamp set. I decided I would be giving my watercolor pencils a try with this image and this might be the first time that I am pleased with the result. I still find the result a little washed out compared to other mediums I'm generally using to color, but by adding brown shading to the image, I was able to get something a little more to my liking. I also let my image dry and went back to add penciled details that I didn't dilute, so that made a difference in giving the rooster depth as well.
The Buffalo Check background seemed a natural fit for the country vibe of the set, and I added a few branches at the bottom to fill in the space a bit. I created the stitched frame with the Stitched Shapes and the Layering Circle Framelits. The rooster image was glued directly on the card base, underneath the window. I kept debating on whether to use dimensional adhesive or glue the cardstock flat, and finally, I decided to keep the card mailable without additional stamps and glued the cardstock flat. A little flower from the Butterfly Elements (SAB offering) was also added to the sentiment strip, which reads "Just a Note..."
On a side note, I've been buying wood-mounted background stamps ever since I started stamping and kept on selecting wood-mout even after clear-mount was offered. Buffalo Check is the first background stamp I ever bought unmounted and I'm grateful I did. I have noticed that with angular designs (the type that have stripes and will look obviously crooked if you don't stamp perfectl y straight), getting the wood-mount stamp exactly where you want it on the cardstock is challenging. Furthermore, I had a feeling that the full squares of this design might require double-stamping in order to get full ink coverage. I was right about that and being able to mount the stamp in my stamp platform had made a huge difference in being able to get the desired results with this stamp. I don't think I would be pulling this stamp out half as often if I had selected wood-mount. I will admit I had to reason with myself, though, as the urge to stick with wood-mount was strong!
