Inspiration: Freshly Made Sketch #339 + Hand Stamped Sentiments Color Challenge #290
This is a fairly simple card, as reflected by the simple supplies list, but I must say I'm pretty happy with the result. The colors look great together, and the addition of a little touch of copper really made a huge difference in the final result. I used copper embossing powder for the bird, but I also lined the two corner pieces with a strip of Copper Foil paper, and that totally changed the look of the bottom part. I stamped the sentiment on a scrap of white cardstock, handcut it and popped it on Dimensionals, and I also used the same sentiment tone on tone to create a pattern on my piece of Marina Mist cardstock. Confession time: I never really liked that shade of blue and had the hardest time pairing it with anything to make good use of my ink and cardstock. Paired with these two colours, though, it looks good. What's funny, though, is that I initially wanted to make my card base with Marina Mist (you know, try to use it up!), but the color combo was not looking as good. By simply switching the blue card base for a Razzleberry one, and using the blue for the corner, the combo suddenly came alive. I'm still amazed at how big of a difference subtle design changes can make sometimes. I will miss this fun stamp set, I must say.

This card is one of those creations where the ideas came fast and easy. I knew I wanted to create my background with the Radiating Rays stencil from MFT. I knew I wanted to use the images from the adorable Beach Day stamp set from Neat & Tangled. I knew I would use Distress Oxide inks to ink everything. And I knew I wanted to use bright colours and make my card base out of vellum cardstock for a nice frosty look that would balance out the bright colours.
I got going from there, and along the way, I decided to add the new polka dot ribbon from Stampin' Up! Because the base is see-through, I feel it's easy to work into various designs without overwhelming them. I also decided to use Frosty Sparkle Glitter Kiss through the same stencil to create a shimmery halo around the sun. Then, I decided to stamp my sentiment in the sun center and add a die-cut above it. The sentiment rads, "Happy birthday sunshine" (in French). I
've added the main panel on the front of the card and the mat inside to sandwich the adhesive in between so that it wouldn't show through the vellum card base. That's where experience and good advice come in, as I wouldn't have thought to do that back when I first started crafting.

Inspiration: Lawn Fawnatics #29 + Lasting Memory Layout challenge #393 (stars) + Page Maps November 2017
This is admittedly not the best or most interesting picture, but I still wanted to include it in our family vacation album because it's the only one I thought about taking while we were at Red Lobster. There were many a meal at Red Lobster restaurants when the family traveled when my sister and I were younger. It was part of our vacation tradition. At some point, a lot of Red Lobster restaurants closed in Eastern Canada, so I think there's something sentimental about stopping at one when we travel. Unfortunately for my niece, the restaurant doesn't do the treasure chest with little gadgets for kids or the colorful mocktails with the mug you got to keep. Nonetheless, this didn't prevent us from enjoying our meal.
When I pull out a patterned paper collection, I usually make a scrapbook page first, and then a card with the scraps, but this time around, the card inspiration came first and then I thought the paper and stickers would work great for my Red Lobster picture. Years ago, I purchased a HP Photosmart printer and it ended up being a great purchase. I will still send my big batches to an outside printer, but I use my printer to print out individual pictures. This has really helped me stay more current with the pictures I scrapbook and also to be able to create right away when an idea strikes. This is exactly what happened here - got the idea and finished the page all in one evening. Gotta love when that happens.
You'll recognize some of Lawn Fawn's new release in my design. I used the Porthole Frames to create my title block, and I paired them with the You Are Sublime stamp set and dies to decorate the left side. The gold-star vellum was something I found while looking through my patterned papers and set aside because I thought it would look nice with the nautical paper. On a whim, I decided to make a border and I LOVE how the portholes look tucked under it. The vellum allows the portholes to show, but it also makes the design more interesting to not see the entire circles (like on the sketch).
The lighthouse was a cardstock sticker from the collection, and I wanted beams to come out of it, so I was trying to think of how I could cut my vellum and get the right angle, and then it hit me that I could probably just use my Sunburst Thinlits die to make them. It worked out perfectly! A little bit of old, a little bit of brand-spanking new, all adding up to a fun page!

Inspiration: Lawn Fawnatics #29 + May Viva La Verve Sketch + Little Red Wagon #446 (Waterworlds)
I found those nautical patterned papers in my stash that I thought could work well with the new sealife-themed Lawn Fawn stamps and dies. I knew the porthole and circle flap would work great with the sketch, and I had a nice ombre patterned paper in the collection that allowed me to make a quick water background.
I wanted to add a French sentiment on the front of the flap, so I went looking through my stash and paired two sentiments together to read "Happy Retirement! It's time to relax!" Seemed to go well with the little diver (who by the way might be my favorite image of the new release!).

Lawn Fawn blew it out of the water again with its Summer release. They're just full of lovely, unique ideas and I love how the new stuff always coordinate with the older stuff, breathing new life into supplies we already have. So I came home with my new purchases, spent part of the evening cutting my dies apart and organizing my new stuff, knowing I would have more time to stamp over the weekend. (Three day weekend the day after new release = perfect timing!)
When I woke up Friday morning, this idea popped into my head: how 'bout making a band camp card, inspired by American Pie's famous quote: "This one time, at band camp..." I had the Critter Concert music-playing animals, and I remembered that the Screen Time stamp set had a little girl. In all of two minutes, I knew I wanted to use the curtains from the Shadow Box Theater Add-On dies, the Speech Bubble dies to add the quote, the Little Music Notes dies to embellish and make a Scalloped Box Card Pop-Up to get dimension. I wrote those ideas down quickly on a sheet of paper, because unfortunately I was expected at work and couldn't get stamping, but Friday evening, after work, I went straight to working on that idea.
Pretty much all I had to pick was a color combo, because the rest of the design was very clear in my mind. (This does not happen often, but I love when it does!) I wasn't sure how I would work the flute into my little girl's image, but the way her hands are placed is just perfect to have her hold the flute, which I handcut from the racoon image. There's a little circle on the left side, which is the racoon's hands, but really, it looks here like the metal mouthpiece from a transverse flute. The quote was designed in Word and printed on cardstock, before I die-cut it using the Speech Bubbles dies. I layered the bubbles over a music staff die-cut out of gold foil paper.
I am so, so pleased with the final result. And I just crack a smile every tme I look at it.

I'm still playing with the stamp sets that will soon retire from the Stampin' Up! catalogue. I'm bummed to see Cool Treats go, it was one of my personal favorites. I decided to create a watercolored look for them by misting the ink with water before stamping on Thick Whisper White cardstock. The bold sentiment comes from the Hello Friends stamp set. I stamped it in Basic Black Archival ink and embossed it with Clear embossing powder.
The design was inspired by CAS(E) This Sketch #272.

Inspiration: Inspired By #20
There were three elements I drew from the inspiration picture: the hexagons, the colors and the wood. I got this idea that I could dust off my Hexagon Hive Thinlits and have flowers growing out of it.
I die-cut the shape out of the Wood Textures Designer Series Paper Stack and then went looking for some flowers and picked the Beautiful Bouquet bundle. The colors were inspired by past ColourQ combo #127, which reproduces nicely the soft colours from the inspiration picture. I embossed the pink back piece with the Basket Weave 3D embossing folder, which adds jsut the right touch of texture.
A sentiment from the stamp set was embossed in Blushing Bride embossing powder and I used the retired Hexagon punch to punch it out of the patterned paper, and layer it with Dimensionals. I did the same thing with one of the top hexagon, using one of the discarded piece and mounting it on Dimensionals to layer over the existing grid.

Last week, the Simon Says Stamp blog posted a video about a technique using embossing powders. This was unlike anything I had ever seen before and I was inspired to give the technique a try right away. I have chipboard sitting in my stash from years ago when Stampin' Up! was carrying it, so I took it out and selected a bird. I looked at my embossing powder collection and tried to pick colours that would look nice together, so I mixed Gold Pearl, Tango Tangerine, Pool Party and a touch of white. After doing a couple of layers with the colored powders, I wanted to add the ultra-thick embossing enamel on top. Now, I know I've bought some UTEE back when I started crafting but for the life of me, I couldn't find that jar anywhere. (And I'm sure I didn't manage to get through it all since it was quite a big jar.) So I had to settle for building layers after layers after layers of clear embossing powders. I have a couple of jars of scented embossing powders from years ago and I figured I could use that instead of my regular clear embossing powder, especially since I was experimenting. (So this card smells like vanilla, which you can't tell from the picture!) I also dropped some Glitz Tinsel Glitter in the molten powder while it was still hot. I think that's my favorite touch on the chipboard piece, it's subtle but it has a nice shimmer with a blue-green sheen in there that matches the rest of the project nicely.
So I was happy with the bird I created, but it was late and I had to go to bed, so I left the bird aside and it took a good week before I was able to come back to it. I was finally inspired to make a card with it today, based on the Paper Craft Crew sketch #292, Simon Says Stamp Monday (Stencil It) and Try Stampin' on Tuesday Tic Tac Toe #3 (Emboss + Blue + Outdoors).
On the background, I sponged some So Saffron ink through my stencil, cleaned it and then sponged VersaMark only in certain spots, which I embossed with the same Gold Pearl embossing powder I had previously used. I embossed a piece of Core'dinations cardstock with the Brick Wall embossing folder and lightly sanded the surface to show the white core and give the piece dimension. I had this idea that I wanted a grey circle to mimick the opening of a bird house, and I cut a wooden dowel to make the perch. I stamped a "Happy Birthday" sentiment at the bottom, added a bit of foliage with die-cuts and finished the card off with cord and enamel dots.
Because the chipboard piece was hanging over the edge of the card, I used my envelope punch board to make an oversize envelope. I also pulled out Stampin' Up!'s retired bird punch to decorate the envelope and the inside of the card. This was a satisfying project, as I learned a new technique but pulled out older items I've had in my supplies for a while. It's always nice to know I'm not hoarding my older stuff without ever using it.

Today, I wanted to play with retiring items from the annual catalogue, so I pulled out the Naturally Electic Designer Series Paper and the Remarkable You stamp set. Based on the Tuesday Morning Sketch #453, I came up with this layout. The word at the bottom of the flowers is "Hope" in French. The flowers were stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento ink on Shimmery White cardstock and watercolored with inks. I also used two dies from the Eclectic Layers Thinlits dies: I die-cut leaves out of patterned paper, and I used the big piece with an embossing mat to emboss the design instead of cutting it. I like how it turned out, I think it really adds to the final card.

Inspiration: Lawn Fawnatics #28
My niece asked to spend some time with me over the weekend, and I knew that she wanted us to craft together, so since it was Mother's Day weekend, I prepared a card that she could reproduce for her mom. I tried to make something that would be simple enough that she could put together, but still pretty, and this is what I came up with, based on the challenge sketch. She's 5½, and she loooves working with the Big Shot. Every time we craft together, I keep seeing the improvement in her coloring and handcutting skills. I was commenting on that and saying that it was because she was probably practicing a lot at daycare, and she said that they didn't. I know that statement to be wrong, so when I pointed out that she does craft project that she brings over to her place, and she answered, "Yes, but it's not pretty craft like what we are doing now." Hahaha! So apparently, I'm one-upping daycare!
As you can see, she took some liberties with the coloring and the sequins, but aside from using the tools right, now putting glue on my kitchen table and not hurting herself, I give her free rein to create. In the end, I want to foster her creativity and have her be pleased with the result. I also prepared a project ahead of time because she's told me in the past she likes it when I have something ready for her when she comes over. And look at that smile! She was so happy to show it off and equally as excited to present her mom with the card when we joined her at the restaurant later that day.
Oh, and if you look closely at the picture of her card, you'll see she colored the grass between the little stepping stones in front of the fairy house. She didn't like the white cardstock showing around it. Haha! I've noticed that she does not really get the white borders around the images left by the dies. When she fussy cuts, she follows the black lines very closely, so she's commented a few times about those white borders!

Inspiration: Simon Says Stamp Wednesday (For the Boys) + CAS Sketch #271 + Stamp Ink Paper #149 (Dads & Grads)
When I saw the CAS Sketch, I knew it was my chance to pull out the Sneak a Peek stamp set and have the critters peek in windows. I was looking for patterned papers and the second stack I looked at had nautical papers in it, and I instantly decided to turn the square windows from the sketch into portholes. From there, the card evolved pretty easily. I used my Repeating Circles die from Simon Says Stamp yo make lining up the windows easier (the dies has six holes, but I only used a row of three).
The images were colored with Prismacolor pencils on one of the patterned paper, which is kraft coloured. I think if I had used actual kraft cardstock, it might have had more teeth and helped with blending, but I like how my coloring turned out nonetheless. The sentiment reads "Happy Father's Day, Dad" and I stamped it on patterned paper, then cut the words apart, both in order to fit the long sentiment in the narrow space, but also to have the words stand out on the patterned paper. The little banner at the top is from the dies that came with my Sidekick machine that I thought I wouldn't use and have now used twice in a couple of days. I filled the heart shape with a gold enamel heart.
I had to punch out many circles before I found a combo that worked on the portholes, so instead of wasting those punched circles, I used them to decorate the inside of the card and the envelope. (Remember it's a good place to put those scraps to good use!)
