Fabulous Tulips

I'm really impressed with the new hostess sets this year: there are some really cool ones! Tranquil Tulips is one of them, and after making a card with it, I'm even more enamored. The two-step stamping really gives great depth to the flowers and allow to play with colour.

This is another card that was born out of a demo piece. I showed my mom the new 3D embossing folders (Pinewood Planks) and ran a piece of Tranquil Tide cardstock through the Big Shot just to show her the various depths of embossing we could achieve with those new folders. Later, I was looking at my piece of cardstock, trying to figure out what I could make with it, and I spotted the Color Throwdown combo #449, which included green. I was unsure how this new In Color would look paired with orange, but it looked quite nice with Tango Tangerine and Early Espresso. As I started stamping the scene, I decided to add a touch of Lemon Lime Twist to stamp the grass, and it was when I added this other shade of green that the combo really came to life. I love the result!

I drew inspiration from past Mojo Monday sketch #499 to design the card, and I found my sentiment in the new Happy Birthday Gorgeous stamp set. It is filled with wonderful sentiments so I couldn't pass this one up.

As a side note, the background was initially quite dark, but I daubed some white ink with a sponge on it to make the wood details stand out more. This whitewash effect really made a huge difference on the overall look. I had done this on my seagull card last week as well, on grey cardstock. I'm kind of addicted to this trick now!

I stamped this card late yesterday and I discovered this morning that I'm going to have to go back and fix a stupid mistake I made... The card is 5-1/4" x 5-1/4" and the envelope I stamped is A2 (for 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" cards). I rolled my eyes at myself this morning when I discovered I had done that. It's what happens when you try to finish things up in a hurry.

Fishing With Dad

After seeing so many amazing projects made with the Scalloped Box Card Pop-up die set, I finally caved and got one for myself. This is my first try at using it. I thought it would work well with the Dad + Me stamp set, so I spent a whole evening stamping and die-cutting scenery elements. The design was inspired by Paper Craft Crew challenge #250. On the tic-tac-toe grid, I selected Natural Element (the outside scenery images), Summer Celebrations (Father's Day) and Embossing paste (at the bottom). I added the embossing paste after I was done putting the whole scene together, using dyed Distress grit paste, and I really wasn't sure I was digging the look. Now that it's dry, I think I might like it a little better. I do like the texture it adds, but I wonder if it's still a little too pink (even though I added a few drops of reinker three times). Oh, well. Sometimes you just got to give new things a try and hope for the best if you don't want to keep making the same thing over and over again.

Straight to My Heart

I recently saw online a new My Mind's Eye paper collection with an interesting colour combo, that I interpreted when looking at my cardstock collection as Basic Black + Smoky Slate + Lucky Limeade + Flirty Flamingo + Powder Pink. I had put the combo aside to use on a future project and I finally struck inspiration again this week when I saw a card online showcasing Distress Oxide inks used on a kraft piece of paper. Remembering that the Oxide inks can be used on dark cardstock, I pulled out my cardstock combo again and decided to sponge some oxide inks through a stencil on a piece of Smoky Slate to see what it would like. It was also lucky that the current Oxide line includes Worn Lipstick and Peeled Paint, which suited the colour combo.

After puting the inks in place, I added a layer of Nuvo Glitter Paste (Moonstone) through the stencil.

Inspired by Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge (Stencil It) and Paper Craft Crew Card challenge #250 (tic-tac-toe grid, where I selected Sparkle + Embossing Paste + Clean & Simple), I kept the frills to a minimum to finish the card and drew inspiration from past Mojo Monday sketch #488. I found a sentiment that matched the feel of the card in the Floral Phrases stamp set, which reads "Your kindness touches my heart." That gave me the idea to die-cut the cardstock with the Sweet & Sassy Framelits to match the word "heart." I added two Glitter Enamel Dots on the heart, embossed a piece of Lucky Limeade cardstock with the Layered Leaves embossing folder and added a piece of Flirty Flamingo ruched ribbon.

You're Lovely

When I spotted the Fab Friday challenge #115, I thought it would work well with the You're Delightful hostess set (Annual Catalogue, p. 223). I picked a bright colour combo based on an old ColourQ combo (#97) and kept the whole thing pretty simple. I embossed the sentiment with black powder and added two leaves using the Eclectic Layers Thinlits. One of the two leaves simply emboss the image without cutting, so I fussy cut around it myself. A bit of black mini sequin trim (one of the awesome ribbons added this year) was placed underneath the image. The background was embossed using the Hexagons embossing folder.

Sentiment reads, "You're Charming P.S. Happy Birthday!"

Peacock Feather Birthday Wishes

I was eager to try out some new glitter embossing paste I had recently acquired, so I did a practice test on a piece of Dapper Denim cardstock and left it aside to dry. When I saw this week's Color Throwdown challenge #448, I thought I could use my sparkly background and turn it into a card. The new In Colors were also perfect to include in the mix. The design was inspired by Paper Craft Crew Card Sketch #249. I looked through my stamps to find a substantial sentiment that could become the focus of the card and found what I was looking for in Balloon Adventure. I die-cut the sentiment out using the Stitched Shapes Framelits. The card also features the new Decorative Ribbon Border punch and the Lemon Lime Twist Finely Woven Ribbon. The texture is awesome and the ribbon is really easy to tie. At 1/2" inch wide, it's also easy to include into designs without the bow or knot becoming too bulky, and hard to slide into envelopes. I think card-makers and scrapbookers will enjoy using those new ribbons.

I hadn't used Elegant Eggplant in a long time, but doesn't it look perfect paired with the new In Colors?

I used the You're Claw-some stamp set from Lawn Fawn and since I wanted a French sentiment, I pulled out "Happy Birthday to a Unique Person" from the So Succulent stamp set. The cute little banner was made using the dies from the Scalloped Box Card Pop-Up die set.

To the BBQ King

I thought Just Add Ink sketch #365 could lend itself to using my Let's BBQ set. I wanted the finished card to have a masculine feel, so I picked a colour combo accordingly from the ColourQ list I have on hand. I selected combo #39: Night of Navy, Real Red, Bravo Burgundy and Brocade Blue.

I stamped the card front with the Flannel Plaid background, one of my favorites in my background collection. For the main panel, I embossed the burgundy cardstock using the new Pinewood Planks embossing folder. With the colour and texture, it looks just like a deck! I wanted a fun French sentiment and couldn't find anything specific enough, so I pulled out my typewriter and created my own sentiment, which reads "Happy birthday to the king of the grill."

Mine, Mine, Mine

The Seaside Seagull stamp set from My Favorite Things is adorable beyond words. The images remind me of the lovable seagulls from Finding Nemo. Which is why the "mine, mine, mine" sentiment from the set just cracks me up! When I spotted this week's MFT sketch #338 with the heart, I decided it was perfect for this set with the love-themed sentiment.

To create the heart scene, I sponged some Distress Oxide ink in Broken China over an old cloud mask I've had for years. Then, I die-cut two wave borders from Brilliant Blue cardstock, inked the edges in white to make them stand out and layered them over the white sponged cardstock. I used a heart Framelits die to die-cut the layered cardstock, and I stamped some clouds from the stamp set over my remaining sponged carstock, handcut them out and popped them up with Stampin' Dimensionals. I then stamped the seagull image in black ink, colored it and handcut it out. I have some adorable enamel eyes that I thought would give this seagull the perfect dazed and confused look. (The look of love, perhaps?)

The colours were inspired by the MFT Colour Challenge #72.The grey background was embossed with the Pinewood Planks embossing folder, one of the items I was most looking forward to getting from the new Stampin' Up! annual catalogue. Now that we have the 3D Dynamic folders, they gave us this awesome realistic wood texture that I know I'm going to love adding to my projects. (Just like I've used my Hardwood background stamp over and over again.) Inspired by a trick I saw in the catalogue, I sponged some white ink over the embossed cardstock and it really made the grey details stand out more and gave the wood texture a nice weathered look. A few enamel shapes were added around the main image.

By the way, only when I copied the sketch image to my blog post did I notice that the sketch actually includes a frame around the heart!! Oh, well. Let's call that artistic license...

Relaxing in the Pool

When I saw the Fun in the Sun stamp set, I thought it was cute, but after getting the Distress Oxide inks, this set became a must-have because I thought I could do a really cool water background for it using the inks. My first try turned out even better than I could have hoped. I paired Broken China with Faded Jeans and spritzed on some water. After it was dry, I also spritzed a bit of shimmery spray to make the water sparkly.

Looking for a French sentiment option, I found "Sending you sunny wishes" in a Stampin' Up! set where you pair various words of your choice.  I stamped the words in a row, and added a scallop edge underneath, using the new Decorative Ribbon punch from the annual catalogue. I also dotted the sentiment strip with the new Glitter Enamel Dots (p. 196 of new catalogue). By the way, those are gorgeous! I don't think the catalogue picture does this item justice.

After working on the water background and main image (which colours were inspired by Color Throwdown #447, but I worked on the card throughout the week, so I missed the posting deadline for this one), I was looking for a layout design. I kept imagining cutting my water piece at an angle, so that it went diagonally from one corner to the next, but then I spotted the Freshly Made Sketch #293 when it was posted, and I thought, This works! The circle will look just like a pool. To cut such a wide circle, I pulled out my old Coluzzle template. Then I got the idea to use the template to create a pool border out of Crumb Cake cardstock to give the shape more definition. The blue cardstock was embossed with an embossing folder that looks a bit like tiles. And after putting everything together, I decided the card would look better embellished with the two other images from the stamp set, so I colored and handcut those, before adding the ball in the pool and the beach bag at the end of the sentiment strip.

I'm happy with the result. This card just makes me smile.

Never Without my Coffee

I received my first order from the new annual catalogue yesterday, just in time for the long weekend (Quebec provincial holiday). I drew inspiration from the Global Design Project challenge #92 and the awesome colour combo from Stamp Ink Paper challenge #104. It gave me the chance to pull out two of the new In Colors and my early prediction is that Lemon Lime Twist is going to be my favorite and the one I use the most. I think it fills a void in our past and current green line and it looks like the kind of green that will be easy to pair with a lot of different colours all through the year.

Looking at the inspiration project from the Global Design challenge, the jar image inspired me to pull out my new Coffee Café stamp set, to keep the idea of the container. Since I was planning on die-cutting the image, I used another new item I was eager to try: embossing paste. I put a blob on a non-stick sheet and added a few drops of Island Indigo reinker to it, and a touch of Dazzling Diamonds glitter. I wasn't sure how my I would need, so I eyeballed the quantity and the answer is, you really don't need a whole lot since you're spreading it thin through the stencil. I used a big dolup and a small dolup would have been plenty. As not to lose the extra paste, I create a second card front and I put the remnant on a die-cut to create a cupcake topper. (Will share a picture when I get it finished into a card.)

The sentiment was added directly to the cup. What in English says Thanks a Latte became "Never without my coffee" in French. I kept the idea of the serntiment strip by adding a piece of tied ribbon instead. By the way, have you seen the new crinkled seam binding? It's gorgeous and it's very easy to tie into a pretty bow or knot. The last element I drew from the inspiration card was the diagonal stripes mat, which I created on my project using the Diagonal Stripes background stamp.

I discovered with dismay while putting this card together that I totally spaced out on ordering the new ink pads when placing my order. Argh! I remembered I did have the Stampin' Write Markers in the new In Color shades, though, so I'll be able to use those in the meantime, but what an oversight on my part. The ink and cardstock are always the very first items I add to my first order every year. That's what I get for rushing through my order late at night.

Saying It with Needlepoint

Growing up, I tried many different form of crafting over the years, but the first one that really stuck was counted cross stitch. I had a coworker at my first internship who was heavily into it and gave me a little 101 course so I could give it a try. I first selected a kit of 8 Christmas ornaments stitched on perforated plastic. I couldn't put it down until I was done with all eight and by the end, was totally hooked. I went back to the needlepoint store and decided to select something more substantial for my next project. I remember being really in love with a piece called Camelot Sampler from Teresa Wentzler. I kept going back to it but it was a huge piece with a ton of intricate stitches on it. I asked the store owner if it was too complicated of a project for a beginner and she simply answered, "If you truly love it, you'll get it done." She was right. Although I was stitching every time I had a single free minute, I still ended up putting in 8 months of work on it. Now that I'm a more experienced stitcher, I still can't believe this was the first piece I ever did on fabric.

 Since then, stamping and scrapbooking have taken over as my main hobby, but I still pull out a stitching project every time I sit in front of the TV. I guess it's no surprise then that the Stitched Roses set from Waffle Flower immediately caught my attention when it came out. The company has a few cross stitch inspired set, but I decided to go for the flower one (although the cactus one is pretty cute, too). I drew inspiration from a trick Jennifer McGuire shared and added clear embossing on some parts of the flowers and leaves to make the stitches dimensional. I was first planning on handcutting the flowers and adding them to something else, but I decided I really liked them on the white background and to keep the layout simple, so I simply die-cut the whole white panel with a dotted scallop rectangle die , matted it, added a bit of organza ribbon and a few clear sequins.

Aloha

This card was inspired by Mojo Monday sketch #500 and MFT Color Challenge #71. I was pretty sad to read that this would be the last Mojo Monday sketch, although I can appreciate why Julee would want to gain back a bit of freedom to invest in family time. I've been playing along with the Mojo Monday sketch for years, and it might actually be one of the very first weekly challenge I got into (probably right after the ones on Splitcoast Stampers). I remember getting home from work on Mondays and sitting down at my stamping desk as soon as I could to put together my Mojo Monday card. I'll miss my weekly fix of new sketches because I think Julee had a great eye for design and always put together sketches that were original and different and that really worked. That being said, I have a list of former sketches that I haven't had the chance to play with that I'm hoping to catch up on.

With all of that being said, the sketch inspired me a fun and bright summer card using the new Lawn Fawn release. The company really hit it out of the ballpark with its new summer offering and I'm a smitten kitten. The Aloha set is one of those small, affordable sets with just a few pieces, that still packs in a bunch of cuteness. By the way, if you are wondering (like I was) what the two dots spaced further apart are supposed to be, it's the colour for the cheeks! You can see I've used it here on my pineapple, after coloring it in.

For the bottom part, I used a stencil from the Seasonal Decorative Masks pack (from the 2016 Holidays catalogue). I inked the pattern first, then washed my stencil and then added sparkly texture paste over it, making sure to move the pattern to a different place. I thought this particular stencil looked a little bit like the texture of a basket or even the pineapple itself, so it worked well for a summer card.

The Scripty Aloha was die-cut three times (Peekaboo Peach for the two bottom layer and textured Pool Party cardstock for the top layer). I also inked the edges a bit to give the word dimension. I did the same thing to the pieces from the palm trees, so they wouldn't look flat.

Wild Birthday

What was supposed to be a quick and simple card turned into a whole production that actually took two days to complete. I'm glad I walked away from the card because it was getting nowhere fast and sleeping on it allowed me to start fresh this morning and find a way to finish the card to my satisfaction.

I stumbled unto a YouTube tutorial showing how to make a Flap Fold card. I had never made that specific type of card, so I decided to combine it to the Color Throwdown challenge #446 and give it a try. I was first planning on putting the 'gator in the circle at the top of the card and I think that's what was throwing me off. The second I moved it down to the pink panel, the card immediately started looking better. I was also really keen on pairing the alligator with the Later 'gator sentiment, but it was so small that I would have had to stamp my own with another alphabet set and it had me spinning in circle because I couldn't find anything to make it work like I wanted. The second I switched gears and stamped "Have a wild birthday" in the top circle, everything else fell into place easily. I was looking for something to hold the flap in place like the stamper is showing in the video and I finally figured I could simply add a third animal and use the giraffe's head. Sometimes the simplest solutions are right under your nose the whole time. Once I got going, I couldn't stop, so I even decorated the inside of the card, using the adorable lion image.

This is another Lawn Fawn stamp set that I almost talked myself out of buying since I was trying to be reasonable. It's hard to look at those animals and not smile, though.

A matching envelope was made out of the remaining patterned paper and the circle I had die-cut out of the card.

Thoughts to Lift You Up

This card was inspired by MFT Sketch #336 and Lawn Fawnatics #6.

Ironically, when the new Lawn Fawn release came out, I was in love with a lot of the new stuff, so I was trying to prioritize and decide what I loved best. I kept going back and forth on the Plane and Simple stamp set, wondering if I would really be using it. Figures that the one set I was most undecisive about turned out to be the first set I inked when I had time to sit down and stamp. roll eyes

That plane with the banner is so adorable. I immediately thought of it when I spotted the new MFT weekly sketch. I figured I could make the sky out of that big heart and have the plane fly across it, using the Stitched Trails dies behind it. (By the way, the trails dies are one of those items that is going to be such a classic. Makes me wonder how come it took so long for me to have something like that in my dies collection. It's going to come in handy for so many things.)

I was looking for a French sentiment to match and since the Lawn Fawn challenge theme was "Cheerful Get Well," I went with "Just a Thought to Lift You Up," from a Stampin' Up! set featuring hot air balloons. Perfect!

Full Circle

The picture on this page shows me sitting on the train back from work, reading The Girl on the Train. I've included it in my Hello December 2016 album, but here, I added it to a page talking about coming full circle. My dad worked for CNR (Canadian National Railway) all of his life, and one of his work perks was that the whole family had train passes, so we've travelled by train a lot over the years. Now that my dad is retired, I don't have a train pass anymore, but it turns out that I bought a condo that is five minutes away from a train station and I've been traveling to work via train for the last three years. The journaling explains how it feels like coming full circle, traveling by train again.

This page came together incredibly fast. I knew I wanted to use the Detour collection from Bo Bunny, which has been sitting in my stash untouched for years, and I pulled out a very old set called All Aboard from Stampin' Up!, which I used at the bottom (the train silhouette) of my patterned paper, and to create a stamped element in the oval. This set was actually part of my very first Stampin' Up! order over 12 years ago. It shouldn't be surprising that I had gravitated towards the train stamp set!! The journaling was typed using my typewriter, and the layout was inspired by a January 2017 sketch from Page Maps, which I transferred from 8½" x 11" to 12" x 12".

You're a Treasure

This card was inspired by As You See It #151, Naughty of Nice #40 and Simon Says Stamp Wednesday. I wanted to make a French card, so I found a sentiment that reads, "You're a treasure" in an old Stampin' Up! stamp set, and I added a little stamped gem next to it. The compass was stamped and embossed in navy powder directly on the patterned paper and adorned with an enamel dot.

First trip to Florida

Those pictures of my niece were taken during her first trip to Florida with her parents last year. I had some tropical 6" x 6" papers just begging to be used on a page so I made this very simple layout using a page protector with four 6" x 6" squares. It allowed me to let the papers shine and put this together quickly. I also added some of the matching shaker stickers, including my favorite: "Tropic like it's hot." This one just makes me giggle.
