Featuring Festival of Trees - Gold Star

This card was inspired by the Mojo Monday Sketch #360. As for the color combo, I found it by accident. I had pulled out cardstock colours for previous projects and put aside my retired color folders since those are put away in a different drawer. As I was about to put the folders away, I found that I liked how they looked paired together, so I put them aside for my next project. I always like using different colour combos on Christmas cards to keep them interesting, so it seemed appropriate for this card.

Even though the colors are retired, the card features loads of new stuff: the Festival of Trees stamp set and the matching Tree Punch, the Gold Metal Basic Buttons, the On Point embossing folder and the Confetti Stars Punch. I used this punch on Taken With Teal cardstock and then placed a piece of Gold cardstock underneath. I used the Gold cardstock for my sentiment strip as well: I embossed the sentiment in Gold Stampin' Emboss powder on it and cut it out using the Big Shot and the Bitty Banners Framelits dies. A Gold Metal Basic Button was added at left, with a knot made out of Baked Brown Sugar thick baker's twine.

The background True Thyme cardstock was stamped with the Hardwood background stamp (my favorite) and the oval frame piece was embossed using the new On Point embossing folder. I used a paper piercer and the piercing templates to add piercing around the oval frame (created with the Ovals Framelits dies).

The tree was stamped in True Thyme ink on Taken With Teal cardstock, the tinsel was embossed over it using Gold Stampin' Emboss powder and I punched the image with the Tree punch. A gold star was punched out of Gold cardstock using one of Itty Bitty Accents punches. Gold sequins were taken off the Gold Sequin Trim and added to the tree.

Designer washi tape (Watercolor Wonder set) was added at the top and decorated with Sweet Dots in matching colors. A matching envelope was made out of Primrose Petals Designer Series paper using the Envelope Punch Board.

Bokeh Technique - Joy

I didn't have the chance to stamp all weekend, but decided to try and make a quick card before going to bed tonight. As I was looking at the online challenges for inspiration, I stumbled unto the Friday Mashup, that suggests trying the Bokeh Technique. I had never heard of that one, so I looked at the video they linked to and absolutely loved the look of the finished cards, so I knew I had to give this a try. I paired the technique with the colour combo from the Colour Me challenge and used the CAS(E) This Sketch challenge for the design.

I had pulled out a sentiment set for the banner on the card but as I was making my card, I spotted a "Joy" die-cut made out of Brushed Gold cardstock leftover from a previous project that I hadn't used. I really liked the look of the brushed gold with my colour combo and decided to use it. This word comes the Wonderful Wreath Framelits Dies set (which will be sold in the upcoming Holidays catalogue). The embossed banner was another piece I found in my Crisp Cantaloupe cardstock folder, again leftover from another project. (The lesson here is that just because a piece does not work on a project does not mean it won't on a future one, so keep them close for inspiration.) To give depth to the die-cut, I cut the same word out of Lost Lagoon cardstock and glued them one over the other, moving the top one slightly to the left so the colour would show. A piece of Calypso Coral Chevron Ribbon was added underneath as well.

I was trying out sequins on the background and they weren't quite working, so I spotted the new Star Border punch (Holidays catalogue as well) and switched gears. I punched the border out of Brushed Gold cardstock and used a dab of Crystal Effects underneath each one to add them to my watercolor paper.

Speaking of watercolor paper, I used a 4" x 5-1/4" piece for my background and held it in place on a scrap of paper with Designer washi tape while I was creating the background. This created the white border, and I like that it looks like a postcard.

Would You Please Stop...

I made a 8x8 scrapbook page with some of the new supplies from the Holidays catalogue, including the Under the Tree Specialty Designer Series Papers, the Gold Basic Metal Buttons and the Wondrous Wreath stamp set and matching Framelits. I also used the Watercolor Wonder Designer Tape and some Gold satin ribbon as well.

This picture makes me giggle because it captures really well the expression my niece makes whenever she is frustrated. In this case, as she often does when sitting on our lap at the table, she was trying to grab everything in sight on the table and since everything was either too sharp or too fragile, we kept pulling things out of grasp. Branch Out Sympathies

I was completely out of sympathy cards already so I wanted to use the retired set Branch out to make one. I centered my design around the Make the Sketch Challenge #33 and knew I wanted to use the new Typeset Specialty Designer Series Papers. Then, I decided to use the Woodgrain embossing folder on Basic Black Core'dinations cardstock to make my background.

When I pulled out my Very Vanilla cardstock file to grab cardstock for my card base, a die-cut of a maple leaf fell out of the folder (die-cut with the Autumn Accents Bigz die). It was a leftover that hadn't been used on a previous project and that I had left with my vanilla cardstock. I thought it would make a great accent to go with the tree image, so I decided to include it in the design on a whim.

The front panel is a piece of designer paper on which I embossed the tree in Black powder. I also stamped the splatter image from the Gorgeous Grunge stamp set in Gold powder. The center panel is a piece of Brushed Gold cardstock, which gives just the perfect subtle shimmer to my project.

I used a piece of the new Gold satin ribbon (which is just luscious) and wanted to add a button on top. I first thought of the new Gold Basic Metal Buttons we carry in the Holidays catalogue, but the tone-on-tone wasn't popping enough, so I remembered the Very Vintage Designer Buttons. I also remembered a trick Shelli Gardner had shared at convention a little while back: rolling the top bottom of your bottom on your VersaMark pad then dipping it in Gold Stampin' Emboss powder. Beautiful result! I added a bow made out of Gold baker's twine as well.

Here's my tip to you: The metallic baker's twine (silver and gold) comes undone easily, so don't even bother trying to put it through the button holes. It's too finicky and you'll lose your patience and your mind over it. I simply tied a bow and added it to the top of a button with a mini glue dot. Much simpler and allows for perfect placement!

 

The sentiment comes from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set. It is interesting to note that I've been keeping track of the use I've made of my supplies to see what I use most and what I don't use enough of and I noticed that I have used my Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set on 74 projects so far!! Now, if that doesn't prove that this sentiment set is the most useful and versatile stamp set you can invest in, I don't know what will! It includes sentiments for all occasions and is the perfect size to fit on your project, whether it's on a tab, a punched piece, a little tag, etc. I try to vary the sets I use, but this is the one I always fall back on whenever I can't find what I need in any other sets.

Notice how the envelope is decorated as well? This is a piece I salvaged from my first try, that didn't make it on the card. I tried doing a resist technique by embossing the tree in clear powder and rubbing ink around it. The Specialty paper is very, very thin (think dictionary pages) so the embossing on it wasn't as crisp as it usually is and I didn't like the look of the emboss resist. I was using So Saffron ink and we could barely see the tree amongst the dictionary entry, so I switched gear and stamped another image on another piece of paper. At the end, though, instead of chucking my initial image, I thought I would experiment with it. I wanted to know if I covered the whole paper with VersaMark then gold powder, if the tree image would show through once I heated the powder. It didn't, but you could kind of see the shadow of an image in the light because the clear embossing was a little thicker. Definitely not enough to be a main image, but I did like how we could see the dictionary text through the gold embossing. My first idea was to die-cut another leaf to decorate the envelope or the inside of the card, but then I decided to keep experimenting instead. I stamped the tree again in VersaMark OVER the embossing and added black powder, then heated. The image stayed in place but it did melt into the gold powder instead of being raised and the black image isn't as glossy as regular embossing is. It's a neat, different result, and I wanted to showcase it on the envelope. Goes to show that you can find some cool ideas when you try and reuse the leftover pieces you have on your craft table.

Featuring Making Spirits Bright - Let's Raise a Glass

This card was inspired by the Viva la Verve Sketch (August Week 3) and my new supplies. The papers I used on this card are my new favorites! They are from the beautiful All is Calm Specialty Designer Series Papers collection. They are shown on Christmas and winter projects in the catalogue, but as you can see here, they can easily be used for any theme or season as well - Spring, baby, congratulations, wedding, etc. The pack includes two pages with Silver foil designs on them, and they look wonderful.

Here, I used the polka dots to mimick the bubbles on the image from the Making Spirits Bright stamp set. (Ain't that name clever?) I really love my Happy Hour stamp set (still available in the annual catalogue) and have used it quite a lot, so I was happy to see another drink set being offered. It's a very versatile theme, since you can raise a glass for almost any event! With this in mind, I think this card could be used for a variety of events: New Year, wedding, new home, new job, retirement, etc.

I took advantage of the promotion offered by SU! and scored the Bright & Beautiful bundle currently offered at 15% off. The Bright & Beautiful stamp set is a new release that will be offered in the Holidays catalogue and which you can get in advance when buying the bundle, which also includes the Stars Framelits dies. I didn't have those yet and was trying to decide whether I would buy the Bright & Beautiful stamp set because it would mean having to get the Framelits as well. When I saw they were offered on sale, it was all the convincing I needed! So I used the Framelits here to die-cut stars out of Dazzling Diamonds glimmer paper and Silver paper. The smallest star was punched with the Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack.

I used some All is Calm Designer tape in the center of the card, and the new Lost Lagoon 3/8" Silky Taffeta Ribbon. For the main image, I wanted a scallop rectangle, so I pulled out the now-retired Scallop Square Duo Bigz die. I die-cut a square to start, then placed my die-cut piece back on the die, to shorten my piece.

The main image was stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento ink and colored with Blendabilities markers. I then embossed the sentiment in Silver Stampin' Emboss powder, and added rhinestones as bubbles. I didn't think to add Dazzling Details, but I think it would have looked nice. I might have to go back and do just that now!

Featuring Santa Stache - Nutty or Nice?

My card today is featuring a new stamp set released in the Holidays catalogue called Santa Stache. It is one of the most adorable stamp set SU! has ever issued. Instant love for me and the one set I was the most excited to play with when I received my preorder. It's going to make an awesome pairing with the Blendabilities markers, which I have also used here on my card.

As mentioned in a previous post, I thought the Nordic Noel Designer Series Papers were going to look fab paired with this set, and I confirm that they do! The design was inspired by The Deconstructed Sketch #164. The Calypso Coral background was embossed with the new Filligree Frame embossing folder. I cut a piece of DSP using the Apothecary Accents Framelits dies and I used two silver sequins from the Frosted Sequins pack (also new in the seasonal catalogue) at each end.

I stamped the sentiment from the same set and punched it out using the Artisan Label punch, to add as a tab underneath my central piece. The sentiment cracks me up: "Nutty or nice?" Just perfect to go with the image and adds a touch of humour to the card.

Holidays Catalogue Preview - Wondrous Wreath

I cannot wait to share this year's Holidays catalogue with everyone - it's a great one! My preorder got here on Thursday and this is the first project I had the chance to make with the new releases.

This card, based on the Sketch Frenzy Friday challenge, uses the Wondrous Wreath stamp set. This set is offered in photopolymer, which simplifies the two-step stamping process. I created my wreath using two ink colors: Pear Pizzazz for the full leaf wreath image and Garden Green for the second image with less leaves. Then I added the berries using Real Red ink.

Then here comes the best part: we have Framelits (Wonderful Wreath) to cut the wreath out! This is wonderful because we could never have such a precise cut using a kraft knife! (Plus, it would take forever and a day.) I love that the Framelits dies set include two word dies as well: Noel and Joy. I decided to use Noel to make a French card, and paired the die with Brushed Gold cardstock. In French, the word Noël has the two dots on the letter E, though, so I was thinking it was too bad we didn't have a gold Blendabilities marker and then I thought, wait a minute, we do have the Gold Stampin' Dazzle marker (Catalogue, p. 211)! So I used the marker on pearls and added those to the word and it worked perfectly.

To mimick the shape of the banner on the sketch, I used the Deco Label Collection Framelits dies. I inserted my piece of paper under the Framelits at one end and over it on the other so it would only cut one end.

The red button is from the Nordic Designer Buttons pack, and I added a Frosted Sequin on top, with a pearl. Aren't those sequin snowflakes adorable?

The patterned papers are from the Nordic Noel Designer Series paper pack. While I was initially not sure whether I liked them or not when I opened up the pack, they are quickly growing on me and I think they look awesome on this project. I also plan on pairing them with the Santa Stache stamp set, which I think they will look awesome with, so keep your eyes peeled up for that.

Featuring Stampin' Up!'s Something for Baby - Hi, My Name Is...

I wanted to add a gender-neutral baby card to my card stash, so I pulled out the Something for Baby stamp set, which was released this year in the new annual catalogue, along with matching Framelits dies.

I didn't want to hide the pretty patterned paper so I used vellum for the circle shape. I embossed the circle center with the Polka Dot embossing folder and ran my Whisper White ink pad along the edge to make it stand out.

I found this sentiment in one of my sets that reads, "Hello, My Name Is" and I thought it was perfect to go with the baby theme! I left it blank so the card could be personalized when used.

I'm still going on the DTGD challenges, and I paired it with two other challenges as well - Monday Lunchtime sketch #326 and Paper Players #208. I love the color combo! I used the new Dotty Angles stamp set released in this year's annual catalogue for the background and embossed it in Crushed Curry Stampin' Emboss powder on a Basic Grey card base and it looks awesome! So festive and bright.

For my middle panel, I decided to create my own pattern using a sentiment from the stamp set Yippee-Skippee! repeatedly in Blushing Bride, then I stamped the sentiment once in Calypso Coral to make it stand out. The little bee image was embossed with black powder and watercolored using inks and a blending pen on watercolor paper for best results. A dab of Dazzling Details was added to the bee's wings for sparkle.

Featuring Stippled Blossoms and Hardwood: Congrats, Newlyweds

I've been drawing inspiration from the Dare to Get Dirty 2014 challenges posted on Splitcoast Stampers to get inspired to stamp this week. This is one of the card that was born out of combining a few different challenges. I really like this color combo, it feels very fresh and summery to me. As I was choosing a sentiment for my design, I decided it would be a good idea to have an extra wedding card on hand, since I don't have a whole lot of those. I picked the beautiful two-steps Stippled Blossoms stamp set as my main images.

To create the card background, I stamped the Hardwood background stamp on Smoky Slate cardstock using Basic Grey ink and then sponged some Basic Grey ink on the design to enhance the weathered wood look. I then used the new Dots & Stripes masks sold by SU! to spritz dots over the wood pattern using Silver Smooch Spray (now retired).

Spooky Shaker

One more creation that was born out of the DTGD challenge list. At the last Regionals we had in Quebec City, a demo had shown on stage how you could cut the round Shaker Frames that we sell apart to use them for other shapes. I decided to give it a try with the Label Collection Framelits dies. I then filled out the shaker with Orange Fine Glitter and a few black beads I had in my stitching material.

I did the faux tearing technique on the envelope for added interest.

The Bride's Portrait

This is definitely different from the wedding cards I would have usually put together, but that'd the beauty of playing in online challenges, pushing yourself to do different things and step out of your regular patterns.

I wanted to create a frame for my bride, so I used the Framelits die and a window sheet to create the frame, along with Silver paper. The little roses are made out of white felt. I had a vision of how I wanted the little roses to look and really struggled before I managed to get them the way I wanted and even now, I'm unsure about the results, but at one point, I had to just let it be and move on. The sentiment comes from an hostess set from last year's catalogue called Banner Greetings. I added a pair of hearts punched with the Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack, out of Silver paper and Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper. The bottom layer that sits directly on the card base is a piece of vellum I found in my scrap pile, that reads "One Love," so it was perfect to go on this card.

I made a matching envelope out of Designer Series Paper from the Neutrals paper stack using the Envelope Punch Board, then used the Label Collection Framelits dies to add a place for the address on it. I used the matching piercing template and my paper piercer to frame the die-cut, and a little silver heart on top to tie in with the card.

Featuring Just Sayin' - Colorful Thanks

I found those papers in my stash that were leftover from a scrapbook page and I thought the word bubbles were perfect to go with the Just Sayin' stamp set, so I paired them for a DTGD challenge. One of the sentiments from the  set was inked with Stampin' Write markers and die-cut with the Word Bubbles Framelits. Then, I used a second Framelits die to die-cut a bubble out of Lucky Limeade textured cardstock, and I used the Owl punch to add a heart punched out of Silver glimmer paper in the corner.

At My Window

Still going on the Dare to Get Dirty 2014 challenges. I got out this long retired hostess stamp (Window Dressing) set since it fitted one of the themes perfectly. The little girl in this set reminds me of my little niece, who is always standing in the window looking out at what's going on outside, so I gave the little girl red hair to mimick my niece's. I used one of our In Color dahlias to add to her headband. I used our Essentials clips at the top of the banner (cut with the Banners Framelits dies) and topped them with Designer buttons.

The color were inspired by the patterned papers, which matched two of our new In Colors: Hello Honey and Lost Lagoon. I used the matching satin ribbons on the banner, along with a piece of Primrose Petal ribbon.

Framed Poinsettias

This is the first card I made for the Dare to Get Dirty 2014 challenges. I tried something new on this card. I wanted to color the image with Blendabilities markers and have the color embossed with gold powder, but since alcohol markers don't work well with embossing, I did this in two step to go around the problem. I stamped the image in Memento ink first, colored it, then I used my trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp the poinsettia image again in VersaMark and then emboss it with gold powder. Worked like a charm!

I also used the Blendabilities markers to color some rhinestones in red and add them to some of the berries on the border. I used a Certainly Celery Stampin' Write marker to color some of the leaves as well. A matching envelope was made using the Envelope Punch Board.

The color combo was inspired by last week's ColorQ challenge (#252).
