This is the fourth and final project I prepared for this month's Creative Crew gallery. (Read more about the challenges here.) I had been very diligent about working on the challenges ahead of time for the first three pieces and then got caught up in life and then created this last project at the last minute. For one thing, I got my dates mixed up and thought Thursday was the last day of September so I stayed up late working on this project, taking pictures and uploading them - only the wake up the next day, tired, and realizing that I still had one full day left to get everything ready. D'oh!
And then, there's the fact that since I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do, I thought it would be a piece of cake and take maybe an hour top. Well, let me tell you, this little tree project is more time-consuming that I first figured! I had done a similar tree a few years ago. Since it was for a contest, I had to send it away and I had always wanted to make another tree to keep for myself later. The old version was a little wonky since I had tried to create a cone base myself out of cardstock and it was decorated with pearls from the Pretties kit strung on silver cord (which we don't carry anymore). This time, I used a styrofoam base and pined the punched pieces on it. I used three different patterned papers, all from the Paisley Petals pack, and punched them out with the Oval punch. I then used my bone folder to curl the ends up and pinned them on the cone, alternating patterns. At the top, I used a Scallop Circle piece to wrap the end of the cone with (adding snips to help with the wrapping) and I decorated the tree with pearls. I then tied a bow out of Old Olive striped grosgrain ribbon and added it on the top of the tree.
I will definitely be keeping this one and I think I might use it to decorate my desk at the office since it doesn't take up too much room. There's another version of the same idea in this year's Idea Book and Catalogue (p. 21, I think) that is also adorable and that catches my eye every time I flip through the book. If time allows, I might make a couple more trees so that I can group them to decorate.
